A Solitary Sentry by Raymond A. Foss

Frozen in place, a messenger of late summer
standing, at attention,
bowed a bit
at the end of winter
having done her job
ready for rebirth
in only a few weeks time
as the melting spreads and the buds come again
repeating the cycle
of the seasons
